Skating...

I took Kitty skating today! It was different than I remember. I remember it being really easy to clomp around in the off-ice area, but that was the hardest part! I nearly fell more there than on the ice. Kitty tried really hard, and by the end we left the wall and crossed the ice a couple of times. She wouldn't let me pull her and let her glide. She said, very crossly, "If you're *pulling* me than I am not *practicing!*"

Much thanks to a coworker who warned me that it is really cold. Colder than you expect. We were well prepared in jeans, sweatshirts, and mittens. There was another family there in shorts and light hoodies, and they had blue lips and fingers.

One fun thing is that I think I had maybe a month, maybe more, of ice skating lessons when I was little, and when I got on the ice it all came back. Swizzle! Fall on your butt! Lace your skates tight tight! I saw some poor wobbly teenagers whose skates were barely laced, much less tied tightly. I hadn't thought about it before, but that's one argument in favor of "lesson dilettantism." You know, try a bunch of stuff--you never know when it will come in handy.

my mother clearly subscribed to that theory of lesson dilettantism: jazz dance, tap, ballet, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, swim, typing, flute, piano and probably a few more if I think about it.
