Kitty: Mama, what's hell?
Me: What? Like when mama sometimes says, What the hell?
Kitty: No.
Me: Ok, so how else have you heard it?
Kitty: yeah, ok, like when you say what the hell.
Me: It's a thing people say when they're mad sometimes.
Kitty: But what is it.
Me: Um, it's the opposite of heaven.
Kitty: But what is it.
Me: Well, ok, some people believe that if there is a heaven for souls to be in, and heaven is good, then there has to be a bad place too, to be the opposite, and that is hell.
Kitty: Ok.
Me: (silently) Thank god.
Of course, it all turns out that this came up not because of my bad language but because she watched some ep of Futurama with her father where Bender went to hell or something. Sigh.
